Column Wraps & Radiused Stone
Columns are where cheap veneer gives itself away. Radiused pieces wrap the curve instead of faking it.
Miami Stone Veneer Specialists gets more calls about columns going wrong than about any other detail. The reason is always the same: somebody tried to wrap a curve with a flat product.
The faceting problem
Take a flat stone panel, cut it into narrow vertical strips, and wrap those around a round column. Geometrically you now have a polygon, not a cylinder. Each strip is a flat plane and the transitions between them catch light as hard vertical lines.
From two feet it looks acceptable. From ten feet — which is where everyone actually stands — the column reads as an octagon wearing a stone costume. It's the thing that separates a $40,000 elevation that looks like a million dollars from one that looks like a strip mall.
What to use instead
- Round columns. The Curved piece from our Mediterranean collection — 15¾ by 7 1/16 inches, cast to a radius. It wraps properly because it was moulded curved, not bent.
- Gentle radii over 4 feet. Small formats like Ledger Stone will follow the curve with enough joints to hide the faceting.
- Square columns. L-shaped corner pieces, four per course. Straightforward, but order them — mitred field stone at a corner shows its thickness.
Budget columns separately
This is where estimates go wrong. People calculate column area as flat square footage and get a number that's 50% short.
Columns are mostly corner and radius — the expensive pieces — with very little cheap field area in between. Two 10-foot round columns at 18 inches diameter is only about 90 square feet of surface, but it can cost what 200 square feet of flat wall costs.
Send us the column count, height, diameter, and whether they're round or square, and we'll price them properly rather than letting you find out later.
One structural note
Adding veneer to a structural column adds weight and dimension. On a load- bearing column check with your engineer, and check the finished diameter against any clearance the column has to respect — a stair, a driveway, a walkway width. Two inches of stone all round is four inches of diameter.

Can you wrap a round column with flat stone? +
Only by cutting it into narrow segments, which gives you a faceted, polygonal column. It looks wrong from ten feet and it's the single most common way a stone column goes bad. Use the radiused Curved piece instead.
What's the tightest radius you can follow? +
With small formats like Ledger Stone, roughly a 4-foot radius before faceting shows. Below that you need the purpose-made Curved piece, which is cast to a radius rather than cut to one.
Do square columns need special pieces? +
Corner pieces, yes — four per course, one at each corner. They're L-shaped so the joint turns the corner rather than showing the panel thickness. Budget the linear footage separately from the field area.
How much does column stone add to a job? +
More per square foot than flat wall, typically 40 to 70% more, because corners and radiused pieces cost more and there's more cutting. Two 10-foot columns can easily cost what 200 square feet of flat wall costs.
